Wikipedia (authors) refer to a ship as a person. Not surprising since we know ‘person’ is not a people/man/woman. Person is contemporarily described as a business entity, but historically, a ship operated as a business entity. Hence, ship and person were synonymous. The footnote on this important first sentence references Mercenaries, pirates and sovereigns.
