Indonesian students proved to the world that protests can cause major political changes. Suharto, the president of Indonesia, resigned from office less than 2 months after students began to protest the government’s economic policies.
The protests began peacefully but turned into riots after the army killed 6 protesters. After the death toll rose above 500, Suharto promised to reshuffle his political cabinet to appease the protesters and the rioters. Despite his promises, thousands of students continued to protest outside Parliment and eventually convinced Suharto to resign.
